It’s not often I post twice in one week, much less in one day. But this one begged to be finished and posted before the sun set on this day. Don’t ask me.
Measures 16″ x 12″. Linen and muslin. Dyed using variety of stuff including black walnut and avocado. The color is pretty close to accurate but the focus–well–the focus could be better but not tonight. I may replace with a better pic tomorrow. Or not.
Here IT goes, yes? yes. everything here. what is given so clearly and what wants to
be partially hidden. i see a beast, teats hanging, tongue and then i see an eagle. i see
many things. Shape Shifting. the images, stitching are FINE and evocative. and also
the mystery of the dye cloth…
oh and ahhh. YES.
yes. and again, yes.
love to you

i see the beasty, see the teats, don’t see the eagle but so glad it’s there. and “shape shifting.” what a mysterious, marvelous ability. we do that too, don’t we. we humans–shape shifting constantly on all levels.
i’m going to be doing more can wrapped dyeing. liking the results a lot. and love love to you, dear Grace.

it was a wonderful day. and it did some thing to me that i can’t explain. Grace raised the notion of “shape shifting” in her comment. and that’s what happened yesterday. some thing inside of me shape shifted because of this cloth. love hearing from you, so much.

While the eye is drawn to the antlered road runner and the swirling red dust devil, I am just stunned by the dark dyed background cloth. It holds mystery, story and spirit of the night…

antlered road runner. omg. i’m laughing now. and all along i thought it was a tail less stork with strange headdress. now I have learned something.
the cloth background. muslin wrapped with avocado skin pieces around a can , boiled for a bit, soaked for a while, rinsed and dried. that’s fast becoming one of my favorite dyeing techniques. the strips of cloth i used on the can were doubled over to the width of the can so no cloth covered the bottom.

It is a tail less stork with strange headdress…it is an antlered road runner, it simply IS what each of us sees in a cloth; our own unique discovery, one of the sheer joys of looking at cloth work. Equally a joy and what has made me so jazzed today is reading of one of your favorite dyeing techniques. To freely share what we do is such a gift and oftentimes an inspiration. I’ve done some avocado skin dyeing, but not much with tin cans so it will be a good technique to try later on.

it was so interesting to read your response to Grace..your feeling of shape shifting because..this piece is /feels so strong..you have written several times about well “i try not create cloth that has an indiginous-perhaps Native American look to it “..because i think this work does not look derivitive ..it looks distinct, and complete unto itself..i
to me it seems as if it looks back to a past, rich in myth and stories that were surely carefully handed down..but it seems fresh and contemporary..and uniquely yours..i hope you keep bringing us things from this place..it is magical cynthia

what it feels like from this end is that sometimes i just fall into that place-almost as if by accident, which of course is a very funny notion. accidents? i don’t think so! but i love it when it happens and need to cultivate more patience when it doesn’t! love to you Cynthia!

Avocado… Oh thank you for that! Every time I cut one I look and look at the skin… I do love this piece. And shape shifting… Fits perfectly with how it makes me feel.

i usually throw the skins and pit in a bag and stick them in the freezer. then when i’m ready to dye, i just grab a handfull.
