Cloth as Container

18 Apr

This white cloth. This image. These different fabrics. ALL had a mind of their own–came together unexpectedly and knew when enough was enough. So here she is. Many things. I no longer know the cloth’s name and that, too, is just fine. Because it contains just SO much.

And after working in the garden this morning, pulling over-wintered mulch aside to let the ground dry a bit, and to discourage the slug population, we opened the bottom of this gooseneck gourd. A gourd that comes from the southwest.navajo gourd

Every fall a church down the road gets in a huge shipment of pumpkins. I’m talking HUGE. Piles and piles of pumpkins and gourds that come in on a tractor trailer. The sight is overwhelming, hard to assimilate–fields and mounds of orange. Last year when we were picking out pumpkins for carving, I got into a conversation with the vendors. The pumpkins are shipped east, by the thousands. From the Navajo Reservation in NM. This gourd, too, was part of that shipment. I cannot say in words what this gourd represents for me. Something too deep to articulate. Another container. Holding cellular memories.

The seeds will soak for a few days and then enter the ground here. Continuing on.

And finally. The first dandelion greens of spring.033

beautiful piece, amazing how you’ve managed to create the female figure with just a few bits of fabric and stitches, very subtle. what a funny gourd, reminded me of a muddy swan

i have gourds here. have given away billions of these seeds. all sizes and shapes.
used to draw on them. had i known, would have sent you BOXES. but then…BOXES
would not have given the same feeling as your seeds. don’t they look like little sleeping
    bats?, the seeds????
ok…so i am putting off, like a delicious anticipation, putting off saying what it felt like to
    click into the
    Cloth.
    o.
o, the Cloth. could not in a million years be more perfect.
i have to take a Very Deep Breath.
and can i say that i have claimed it? well, i just did.
When can she come here? OR
i should ask…CAN she still come here? or do you need her there?
    hurry…answer

sleeping bats. perfect. that’s just what the seeds look like. and every year i promise i’m going to raise more gourds because i love them, and then they don’t seem to have a place because of space–so this year they’re growing vertically. and i just can’t wait.

it’s me, grace, replying to you Mo. part of this is due to your
enthusiasm and encouraging support too…to see the work of our hands
as a viable means of support for all aspects of our lives, and how they
are not separate, as we are not separate. just one moving circle.
      so, thank YOU, too….
